Unit 10: What advice would you now give to someone writing his/her first scientific paper?

The advice I would give to someone writing their first scientific paper is to find a scientific topic that first will interest them and to figure out what they want to argue reqarding the subject and to come up with three things that will support their position. They should also be aware of plagarism and be advised how critical it is to give credit to their sources.

They will need to make time to research the subject and to be sure they make plenty of time for this and to try using note cards using numbers to identify what reference goes to what note card. For instance I would make out reference cards with all the information and number then jot down useful information on note cards with the number on top from which source it came from. Why? Because if you don't do this you will waste a lot of time going back and forth in books or notes and can become quite an irritation.

Then once they have done some research they will need to brainstorm ideas that will be coordinated into the paper by using a list, informal outline, bubblling, or just simply writing down questions. Now that brainstorming is done you will have an idea about where you want your paper to go and what you want to include.

The next step is writing an outline and this is going to be a map to the success of writing the rough draft.

Now write the rough draft inluding the intro, thesis, and follow outline with main ideas followed by supporting evidence and then complete the conclusion and of course references.  After this you will want to revise and edit the rough draft by looking for grammar, typos, punctuation and spelling mistakes. Not only this check citations are they correct and read paper aloud to see if it flows, and wheter or not each paragraph flows intor the next one.

Once all of these steps are done fix the nooks and cranies and then it is complete.

It is a timely process but if you stay organized and make time to do things logically instead of trying to rush through it will make things much easier on you.

Well this is what I would tell someone when writing a scientific paper.

Hope you all do well this is the last blog post and and last week of the term so I hope you all have enjoyed this class as much as I have and best of luck to you all,

Honey

Unit 9: How do you feel about writing at this point? Has your idea of writing changed throughout the course?

Hello Everyone,

After taking this class and reading a lot of the reading and getting to know and learn the writing process has been awesome. I feel like I have benefited a lot from this class. I really like to write and I have even thought about writing a novel about my crazy life. Seriously. Ha ha ha know it sounds silly but I have thought of this. I keep a journal as well and write an entry at the end of the night unless I doze off.

I think my idea of writing has changed a lot throughout the corse I have learned teqniques to help me become a better writer and the one thing I really took in this class is using brainstorming and informal outlines to help come up with ideas and to ask questions to find an answer for your paper. This is one thing I never did before and it really helped me with findind ideas to put into my paper so this was one great thing. I also liked the peer review and I learned a lot of new techniques and ideas from other students and of course Professor Julie!

Wow Julie is honestly the best instructor I have had so far at Kaplan! Julie is understanding, positive, helpful, nice, honest, smart, and very patient. I think her positive attitude and the way she pushed us all so positively and got us involved in seminar also helped me with this class and my writing.

At the beginning of this class I would have rated my writing at about a 5 now I think I am at an 8 I still have some problems but its nothing I can't work on and look forward to do so!

I hope you have all benefited as much as I have and I hope you all have a great week,

Honey

Unit 8: Do you plan to continue your blog even after the course?

Hello Everyone,
I have enjoyed using the blog for this class because I feel like it gives you a chance to view other classmates thoughts and/or views on things. This has been interesting and you can use this blog to chat to one another about class and help eachother with ideas or simply say hello. Although I enjoyed blogging this term I feel like I only get on to do what I need to for class and post to at least two to three peoples blogs. If I get bored I'll get on and read others too. Other than this I don't have a lot of time to just get on and blog. Lets face it we all have lots of homework, kids, housework, work, grocery shopping, seminars, church, and so much more that life has given us. Its just so hard to find time you know? Maybe once I have completed school I think I will start to blog again actually. I enjoy it and I think it is pretty cool.

I hopeyou are all having a good week so far and we are almost done with this term I can't believe it.

Unit 7: How do you feel about peer reviews? What have your experiences with them been like?

Hello Everyone,
I think peer review is a wonderful thing and more instructors should offer this when students will need to submit a research paper. Some people aren't the best at grammar, tend to write run on sentences, not catch spelling, repeat themselves or maybe something they wrote does not make sense. Imagine not having the opprotunity of having peers review your work to help you find these errors. You would not catch them and you would get dinged for all these things when you submit your final paper. This can be hurtful depending on the instructors grading process. Any assistance to perfect a paper to me is positive for everyone.

It can hurt your feelings at times yes. We all think we did our best work and when someone critisizes it this can make you feel bad in a sense but you have to remember that this is a positive thing. No one is perfect even people who write books make mistakes. Don't take things to heart when some one picks out things that are not right in your paper and appreciate the fact that they took the time to read your paper and wanted to help you by pointing these things out. You never know someone could have a great idea for you!

Have a great week everyone,
Honey

Unit 6: Share what you have personally been dealing with the last six weeks.

The beginning of the six weeks started off ok with school however the 5th and 6th week for me have been totally crazy! I have had family issues going on this week and almost lost my sister to drugs. Worst part of it all is that she has two beautiful boys that were taken by the state and put in foster care for 2 days. While I couldn't sleep at night frreaking out because I didn't know where they were or what kind of people they were with. I fought two days and missed work for two days and had hardly anytime to study or work on paper because of this issue. Finally after background checks house inspections and drug screening I have inherited my two nephews. Other than this slight bump the past six weeks have been fine I have more struggles with my other class rather than this one. The instructor is very hard to understand and it hurts me because when taking anatomy and physiology you really need to know what the instructor is saying especially if you can't understand something and need to ask questions. Rather than ask during seminar I ask by email and this has helped somewhat. I am almost done with my rough draft should be done with it by tomorrow night I hope all the kids will be here tomorrow may have to pull another all nighter tonight! I gotta do what I gotta do! Lord please give me the strength. Have a nice week,
Honey
